New Comics Day! The Best Bets

Wednesday is New Comics Day. If I could I would buy all the comics in the world, but I’m broke half the time so I gotta limit myself to only about 10 or so. Here are 10 comics that come out today that I’ll be picking up and so should you – I mean if you collect comics that is.

10. Daredevil #18 – Marvel Comics

Written by: Mark Wade

Drawn by: Chris Samnee

• The biggest Daredevil story yet begins here!

• The debut of a new menace in New York – the killer called Coyote!

My thoughts:

This series just won big time at the Eisner’s at this years San Diego Con, and it’s well deserved – this is one of the best comics out there right now.

9. Spider-Men #5 – Marvel Comics

Written by: Brian Michael Bendis

Drawn by: Sara Pichelli

• The shocking conclusion to the Spider-Man event of the year!

• How will the amazing Spider-Man get back to his own reality?

• What will both Spider-Men due now that they know they’re not alone in the universe?

My Thoughts:

This fun comic comes to an end with this issue. Worth the price alone for the awesome art of Sara Pichelli

8. Justice League # 0 – DC Comics

Written by: Geoff Johns

Drawn by: Gary Frank

• Billy Batson takes center stage in this issue as he unleashes the awesome power of Shazam in a special origin story!

• Also featuring the not-to-be-missed origin of Pandora and the next seeds of TRINITY WAR!

My Thoughts:

DC continues it’s annoyingly, story interrupting, ZERO issue event. On the plus side Gray Frank can draw the shit out of shit.

7. Wonder Woman # 0 – DC Comics

Written by: Brian Azzarello

Drawn by: Cliff Chiang

• A facet of the past is revealed – and a foe is introduced!

• How did Wonder Woman become a star pupil of Ares?

My Thoughts:

Wonder Woman has been a great read under Azzarello and Chiang’s guidance. Let’s hope their run isn’t fucked up by this pointless Zero issue.

6. Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #15 – Marvel Comics

Written by: Brian Michael Bendis

Drawn by: David Marquez

My Thoughts:

This series took a blow losing artist Sara Pichelli, who went off to drawn Spider-Men, but Bendis’ story is cool enough to keep me around.

5. Nightwing # 0 – DC Comics

Written by: Kyle Higgins

Drawn by: Eddy Barrows, Ruy Jose, & Eber Ferreira

• It’s the origin of Dick Grayson in The New 52!

• From orphan to super hero – it’s all here!

My Thoughts:

DC fucked up big time with their “it’s only been 5 years since the Super-heroes showed up on the scene (as shown in the New 52 Justice League #1). But this timeline makes no sense when it comes to Batman’s many Robins – Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, Jason Todd, and Damian Wayne. Anyway, if you can get past that this origin issue should be fun.

4. Batwoman # 0 – DC Comics

Written by: J.H. Williams III & W Haden Blackman

Drawn by: J.H. Williams III

• See how Kate Kane shed her life of excess and disgrace to become the costumed vigilante known as Batwoman!

• Has she truly put her demons to rest?

My Thoughts:

Another zero issue showcasing the origin of the title character. Here we get Kate Kane’s story and also get more sweet J.H Williams III artwork.

3. The Walking Dead # 102 – Image Comics

Written by: Robert Kirkman

Drawn by: Charile Adlard

• “SOMETHING TO FEAR” concludes!
• The survivors attempt to pick up the pieces after what they’ve just lived through.

My Thoughts:

After the brutal events of issue 100 this series has become even a darker read.

2. Before Watchmen: Nite Owl # 3 – DC Comics

Written by: J. Michael Straczynski

Drawn by: Andy Kubert & Joe Kubert

•  “A man like you loves a mystery.”

My Thoughts:

Overall I’m enjoying the Before Watchmen series. Sure it’s a money grab by DC, but hey, they’re in the money making business. These comics aren’t taking away anything from the original series – and in some cases they are adding to it.

1. Ultimate Comics The Ultimates # 15 – Marvel Comics

Written by: Sam Humphries

Drawn by: Billy Tan

• Divided We Fall continues!

My Thoughts:

I miss Johnathan Hickman already on this title, but hey, I hear Captain America gets to be President!
