31 Days of Halloween! #28. Lifeforce

I’m counting down my favorite 31 Horror Movies of all time. Every day this month I’ll feature one movie from my list – starting on Oct 1st with #31 and ending  on the Oct 31st, Halloween, with my #1 favorite scary movie.

#28. Lifeforce (1985)

Directed by: Tobe Hooper

Starring: Steve Railsback, Peter Firth, Mathilda May

Plot: A space shuttle mission investigating Halley’s Comet brings back a malevolent race of space vampires who transform most of London’s population into zombies. The only survivor of the expedition and British authorities attempt to capture a mysterious but beautiful alien woman who appears responsible.

My thoughts

Not your normal vampire movie, Lifeforce was missed by a lot of people, even horror fans, and most only discovered it on video (as I did). But it is worth a look – the film has some truly horrifying scenes of mass death that resembles the The Holocaust. In fact, I can’t really think of another mainstream horror film that does a better job of showcasing scenes of the complete destruction of civilization and the madness of humans when the world is ending (well, maybe Dawn of the Dead does a good job of that). The ending of Lifeforce at the church is a marvel of film making on Tobe Hooper’s part – epic in scale and terrifying in content. Oh, and did I mention the hot female vampire that walks around for half the movie completely nude? To quote Booger from Revenge of the Nerds, “Bush! We have bush!”
