#23. The Dead Zone (1983)

Directed by: David Cronenberg

Starring: Christopher Walken , Brooke Adams , Tom Skerritt, Martin Sheen

Plot: Teacher Johnny Smith gets in a horrible accident which forces him into a coma for five years. Once Johnny wakes up, he discovers he has the ability to read a person’s life just by making physical contact with them. When the local police find out about Johnny’s “powers”, they bring him in on a murder case. Soon Johnny’s abilities gets him into more trouble then he may be able to handle.

My Thoughts:

One of the best Stephen King adaptions come from one of the best directors in horror – David Cronenberg. But in a weird way The Dead Zone is the most “Un-Cronenberg” film Cronenberg has ever done. No scenes of weird extra appendages coming out of peoples heads, or stomachs opening up to insert shit into, or people becoming flies and barfing on their food, or fucking each others scars – nope none of that here, just a cool atmospheric film that gave Christopher Walken an excuse to go “Full-Weirdo” and creep everyone the fuck out. This one is worth checking out again or for the first time if you’ve been busy watching crap.
