31 Days of Halloween! #14. The Howling

I’m counting down my favorite 31 Horror Movies of all time. Every day this month I’ll feature one movie from my list – starting on Oct 1st with #31 and ending  on the Oct 31st, Halloween, with my #1 favorite scary movie.

#14. The Howling (1981)

Directed by: Joe Dante

Starring: Dee Wallace, Patrick Macnee, Dennis Dugan, Christopher Stone

Plot: After assisting the police in capturing “Eddie”, a serial killer who had been preying on the homeless, news anchor Karen White needs a rest and at her psychiatrist’s suggestion heads to The Colony, his own clinic. Her role in capturing Eddie had been quite traumatic and Karen can’t picture his face. Once at the clinic however, strange events lead her to believe that her life is in danger. What she does not realize is that the clinic is located near a den of werewolves

My Thoughts

1981 was the year of the Werewolf. The makeup special effect field had grown thanks to fantastic artists like Dick Smith, Tom Savini, Rick Baker, and the mastermind behind The Howling, Rob Bottin. Now a werewolf transformation could be done in real time and not use old, tired methods that had the actor unable to move. The time was right for the werewolf to take center stage. This really is a fun movie to watch and truly does have some scary scenes and jumps that startle you. The centerpiece of the film is Eddie’s transformation – amazing! I do like how Dee Wallace’s character stands there and watches the 5 minute transformation without running away. I guess she thought it was pretty bad ass too.
